Common Hardware Lifecycle Management Timeframes 

Computers: Depending on the type of equipment and how it’s used, you can expect to get 3-5 years out of laptops and desktops. This means that every 3-5 years, you’re replacing your entire workstation fleet.

Sweeping that fact under the rug would significantly underestimate your technology costs. It’s wiser to plan for quarterly replacement of the oldest or most problematic computers.

Now, finance can budget for replacements. You’re not hit with some exorbitant replacement costs at the worst possible time. That would kill productivity and force you to explain to the board why Q3 technology costs are 10X budget.

Servers: What about those big on-premise servers your company invested in? They also get 3-5 years of use. And many companies don’t realize that when they pay that price for storing data in-house. The solution? The less reliant you are on these servers, the better. Move what you can into the cloud, so you don’t have to worry about it.

Common Application Lifecycle Management Timeframes 

With application lifecycle management, the timeframes are even shorter. You have about 3 years. After that, the application will start becoming obsolete. Migration is painful. But keep this timeframe in mind with proper software lifecycle management and you’ll make better purchasing decisions going forward. Never again will you feel trapped forever if you decide another application would be a better fit.
